Mushroom Fruiting body Powder

Mushroom fruiting body powder is made by drying and powdering whole mushroom fruiting bodies or parts thereof. Although it contains some soluble compounds the majority is insoluble fiber. Due to its processing, mushroom fruiting body powder remains original taste and smell and has complete range of functional compounds.

Mushroom Mycelium Powder

Mushrooms are composed of fine filaments called hyphae, which make up the fruiting body and also form a network or mycelium in the substrate on which the mushroom grows, secreting enzymes to help break down organic matter and absorb nutrients. As an alternative to growing fruiting bodies on solid substrates the mycelium can be cultivated in liquid reactor vessels with the liquid filtered off at the end of fermentation and the mycelium dried and powdered. Such cultivation mode makes pesticides and heavy metal more easily controlled.

In terms of cellular structure there is no difference between the hyphae that form the mycelium and those that form the fruiting body, both having cell walls composed largely of Beta-glucans and related polysaccharides. However, there can be differences in the secondary metabolites produced with the mycelium producing more bioactive components such as the erinacines from Hericium erinaceus.

Mushroom Extracts

Both mushroom fruiting bodies and mycelium can be extracted in suitable solvents to increase the concentration of key active components by removing insoluble or unwanted components. The side effects are that mushroom extracts would not be full-spectrum and it’s more hygroscopic than mushroom powder.

Common solvents are water and ethanol with water extraction producing extracts with high levels of soluble polysaccharides and ethanol being better at extracting terpenes and related compounds. Water and ethanol extracts can also be combined to produce ‘dual-extracts’.

In addition extracts can be standardized with rigorous quality control during all phases of growing, harvesting, and manufacturing processes to contain consistent levels of specific compounds.
